If you’re looking for a cozy and picturesque place to spend your holidays, look no further than Frederick. During the fall and winter, the city starts to come alive with a number of holiday-inspired things to do and places to go. From watching a traditional “Nutcracker” ballet performance to seeing Santa ride on his sleigh downtown, here is your guide to the top things to do in Frederick, Maryland, during the holidays.
Merry Tuba Christmas and Weinberg’s Winterfest
Get into the holiday spirit by watching four-part Christmas carols performed by more than 80 musicians using only tubas and euphoniums at “Merry Tuba Christmas,” an annual holiday tradition held locally at the Weinberg Center with incredibly talented players ranging from age 9 to 70. The tuba performance is followed by the Weinberg’s Winterfest sing-along with surprise guest appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.
Watch the stage come alive with a magical setting and lavish costumes of the Rat King, Sugarplum Fairy, toy soldiers and more. Maryland Regional Ballet presents “The Nutcracker” at the Weinberg Center features talented dancers from Maryland Regional Ballet, Frederick School of Ballet and New York City. Four performances will take place throughout the weekend.
Downtown Frederick Events and Attractions
Festival of Lights
Downtown Frederick becomes a picturesque setting around the holidays. The City Hall Courtyard in downtown Frederick will transform during the Festival of Lights, a candle-lighting ceremony where locals gather to sing carols and share Christmas stories. A moving candle lighting ceremony lights up the central courtyard.
Kris Kringle Procession
Also in downtown Frederick, the Kris Kringle Procession is an exciting, family-oriented event where Santa Claus is the star. During the event, Santa rides a sleigh down the streets, accompanied by hundreds of children dressed as elves, reindeer, snowflakes and angels. The parade begins on West Patrick Street and ends at Baker Park where spectators gather to watch the lighting of the City Christmas Tree.

The Perfect Truffle
It’s not a real Christmas celebration without getting your hands on some wonderful holiday-inspired sweets. The Perfect Truffle at Everedy Square is increasingly popular for its high-quality gourmet chocolates and truffles with seasonal flavors like egg nog, fig honey, pumpkin pie, oatmeal stout and maple. The truffles are beautifully adorned in bright colors and perfect shapes, and during the holidays, The Perfect Truffle serves warm hot chocolate, too.
Zoe’s Chocolate Co.
Zoe’s on Market Street is another great place to get your chocolate fix—or chocolate gifts for someone else on your Christmas shopping list. The chocolate shop is known for its perfectly crafted treats in custom shapes and flavors of the holidays including apple pie and spiced pear chocolates. Zoe’s also prepares specialty holiday candies, including its one-of-a-kind peppermint and cinnamon candy canes that were featured in Saveur Magazine. The shop also sells teas, toffee, brittle, coffee and gift baskets.
The Candy Kitchen is Frederick’s old-fashioned candy store that’s been family-owned for more than 100 years. The shop on Market Street has an impressive collection of homemade chocolates sold by the pound as well as candies. Mouth-watering fudge is available in many flavors and special holiday confections like chocolate peanut butter Christmas trees are quite popular.

Clustered Spires Bakery is an independently owned pastry shop with special and custom ordered treats. During the holidays, the bakery gets busy making elaborately iced Thanksgiving and Christmas-inspired cookies, cakes and cupcakes for special events.
Sugar Dot Cookies
If you want adorable cookies to place on your table during a holiday party, head to Sugar Dot Cookies, which makes some of the cutest holiday cookies in Maryland. Sugar Dot’s signature product is its specialty shaped frosted sugar cookies, which during the holidays come in shapes of snowmen, snowflakes, mittens, reindeer, Christmas trees, Santa Claus and more. The store, which is located in Middletown, also hosts cookie decorating parties during the holiday season.
